Colleagues, and partners,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a privilege to join you today for the launch of the Liberia Spotlight Initiative 2.0. This event represents a renewed commitment to ending violence against women and girls and advancing gender equality. I commend the Government of Liberia for its leadership and vision in driving this agenda forward.
Allow me to express special appreciation to His Excellency the President for the recent commitment to legislate against harmful traditional practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM). This bold step sends a clear message that Liberia is serious about protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls.
Spotlight 2.0 is fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 5 on Gender Equality and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities, and with Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development. This alignment ensures that our efforts reflect both global commitments and national priorities, reinforcing the principle of “Leave No One Behind.”
The timing of this launch is significant. It coincides with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in 2025, a global campaign that calls for action beyond words. Spotlight 2.0 provides the framework for that action through supporting stronger laws, better services, and community-driven solutions.
The UN stands firmly with Liberia in this journey. However, success will depend on partnerships. Government, civil society, development partners, the private sector, and communities must work together to transform this vision into reality. In this regard, I wish to thank the EU for its continued partnership and unwavering support for the Spotlight Initiative in Liberia. Your commitment is helping to make this joint effort possible.
Together, let us turn this framework into action and build a future where the elimination of gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices is not just a principle, but a lived reality for all.
Thank you.
