The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Niels Scott, delivered the remarks at a Program celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event was held at the Ministerial Complex , Congo Town, Thursday, December 3, 2021 with high-level attendance of the President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency, George Manneh Weah, along with Ministers of Government, Foreign and International Missions and Partners, Civil Society, amongst others.
In his remarks, President Weah stated, “Disability is not inability. It’s my belief that people with disability have the ability to contribute positively to the growth of our society.” President Weah also stressed that his government will facilitate the works of the different organizations working with persons with disability including the National Commission on Disabilities.
Speaking on behalf of the UN system in Liberia, UN Resident Coordinator, Niels Scott, reiterated the UN in Liberia is resolved to continue working with the community of persons with disabilities. He noted that the UN will continue to “work harder and harder to help you all realize your full potential in society”.
Mr. Scott stated, “we must take the ‘dis’ out of ‘disability’ and start to say ‘ability’, ‘ability’, ‘ability’! “
The UN Resident Coordinator also read the Special Remarks of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in which he highlighted the need for inclusion of all in order to “Leave No One Behind “and realize the Sustainable Development Goals.
Members of the community of persons with disabilities particularly lauded the UN in Liberia, including UN Women, UNICEF and UNDP for their support of the community.
