UN host meeting with political parties on National Census progress

The National Census has commenced in Liberia, amid some challenges that caused a slow start and delays to the process. Enumerators have been stating that their salaries have not been paid and logistics have been insufficient. The international community including the UN and donor partners have continued to support the government of Liberia through all and is further calling for all Liberians to support the census process, as this is a key tool for national development.

Amidst this scenario, the UN in Liberia on Wednesday, called a meeting of political parties in the country to provide some updates and discuss issues arising from the national initiative. 

UN Resident Coordinator a.i , Comfort Lamptey, called on the representatives of the political parties to freely voice their misgivings and opinions, so that they can leave the meeting a lot clearer in mind on the issues of the census, then when they entered. She also challenged participants to proffered concrete solutions to some of the challenging matters arising from the discussion. 

The Government presented on the progress of the census, including the coverage so far, the areas of concentration of enumerators, amongst other matters. The representatives were able to quiz the presenters on the issues and engage in highlighting their opinions on various aspects of the process.

In conclusion the UN Resident Coordinator, a.i. , Madame Lamptey, reminded all that this census was a national process and appealed for the support of everyone in ensuring the successful outcome of the National Census.
