He said: “We must admit that too many of our people are still deeply entrenched in poverty, in spite of the best effort of the United Nations, aid agencies and international partners over many decades in this country to address this situation, at the cost of millions of hundreds of United States Dollars.”
For his part, UN Resident Coordinator, Niels Scott, recognized the need to move forward with strategies and actions that result in hope for a better future- based on the UN Day 2021 theme, Creating a Blueprint for a Better Future”. He stated that “collectively, the Government of Liberia can achieve this as espoused in the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development, and supported by the United Nations as committed in the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2020-2024”.
The UN Resident Coordinator also noted that the UN Agencies Funds and Programs applaud the efforts of the Government on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals at the national level. He highlighted that all the Agencies, Funds and Programmes will continue to support the work of the Government of Liberia in sustaining the peace and promoting development for the people of Liberia. Mr. Scott further emphasized that the United Nations would continue to work more downstream at the county level, closer to communities to support government efforts towards development gains for the people of Liberia.
In conclusion, he acknowledged the resilience of Liberians and reiterate the UN’s continued collaboration and engagement with the people and government of Liberia. Express particular delight for the Liberian Youth Artists who beautifully reflected the SDGs on the UN walls with high spirits, enthusiasm in the shortest time possible.
